What is Azonto?
Ghana's Azonto dance is a vibrant expression born from the streets. Evolving from the traditional Kpanlogo dance, Azonto uses playful gestures to depict everyday activities like washing, driving, or praying. Linked to the Ga word "Apaa" meaning "work," it once showcased professions. Today, Azonto thrives on improvisation, humor, individual expression, and storytelling.
Azonto’s roots can be traced back to the coastal areas of Accra, where it emerged as a popular dance style in the early 2010s (1) and since has typically been accompanied by catchy music. Its popularity spread to African diaspora communities and beyond, with media such as music videos showcasing the energetic moves.
Azonto's social commentary shouldn't be missed. Seen as a response to youth unemployment and hardship, the dance offered a powerful outlet. Beyond entertainment, it became a way to express resilience and community spirit.
“It is an art form that beautifully blends tradition with modernity, incorporating elements of hiplife, hip-hop, and traditional Ghanaian dances.” - Protour Africa
